"@value": "According to a letter from the finder Mårten Petterson to Hans Hildebrand dated November 22nd, 1881, the picture stone was found the same year during gravel extraction in the cemetery of Havor, Hablingbo parish, and was sent to Statens Historiska Museum in Stockholm at the request of Fredrik Nordin. Pettersson, who was living on the farm the Stora Havor, had already discovered artefacts from a grave in the cemetery a few years earlier and sold them to Gabriel Gustafson. The purchase of the grave inventory in 1877 and the discovery of the image stone four years later prompted Gustafson to apply to Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Akademien for funds to excavate the Havor cemetery, which took place between 1884–1888 (Toplak, in press). \n\nThe cemetery of Havor lies in the southern part of Gotland, on the southern banks of the former lake and later moorland of Mästermyr, on the northern outskirts of Hablingbo parish, some kilometres east of the western shore of Gotland. The area, which today is widely forested, stretches around 750 meters from east-northeast to west-southwest on a gravel ridge. Around 260 of approximately 370 registered graves were excavated, dating from the Pre-Roman Iron Age to the late Viking Age, with a hiatus in the late Vendel Period and the Early Viking Age (Nylén 1955, pp. 61–64; Toplak, in press). The north-eastern and probably oldest part of the cemetery was heavily disturbed by gravel extraction from the middle of the 19th century onwards, which led to the discovery of the picture stone Hablingbo Havor I, and the extent as well as the original number of burials in this area remain uncertain. Some smaller groups of graves can be found at the southwestern periphery of the cemetery, either constituting the outer edges of the burial area or belonging to separate cemeteries. The cemetery at Havor is part of a unique complex with an uninterrupted continuity of settlement from the late Bronze Age to the late Viking Age (Manneke 2005; Manneke et al. 2013). Approximately 800 meters east of the cemetery lie a ringfort, several buildings with stone foundations as well as the remains of further settlements in the direct surrounding area. The ringfort was built at the latest at the end of the Pre-Roman Iron Age and was used in several phases at least until the end of the Migration Period as a meeting place and arena for socio-political or religious activities. Remains of settlements north of the ringfort can be dated back to the late Bronze Age or early Iron Age and are therefore slightly older than the earliest burials from the Pre-Roman Iron Age in the cemetery. Several stone foundations south of the ringfort and the rich finds from settlements, graves and the ringfort – such as Roman imports or golden jewellery and especially the unique hoard with a golden neck ring (Nylén 1962; 2005) – bear witness to the great regional significance of Havor as a socio-political or religious central place in the Roman Iron Age and the Migration Period. Following a decline of Havor in the Vendel Period, the late Viking Age burials attest a revival of the local society, probably due to increasing trading activities, but also a significant return to older traditions such as the re-use of older graves or the incorporation of picture stones in burials (Toplak 2022; in press). \n\nThe circumstances of the find as well as the exact location of the picture stone remain uncertain. The location was roughly described and sketched by Nordin in a letter to Riksantikvarieämbete, dated October 16th, 1918. It is likely that the picture stone Hablingbo Havor I came from a demolished grave in the central area of the cemetery, next to the winding path that crosses the cemetery from east to west and around 40 metres to the east of several large grave mounds (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, pp. 53–54). The picture stone was probably re-used as a grave slab or as part of the stone cist in a Viking Age burial, just as the picture stones GP 133–138 Hablingbo Havor II–VII (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, pp. 54–56; Toplak 2022; in press) and several other picture stones on Gotlandic Viking Age cemeteries (see Burström 1996; Thunmark-Nylén 1995–2006 III, pp. 582–584; Rundkvist 2012; Toplak 2022; Oehrl/Toplak, in press). \n\nMT\n"

"@value": "Sune Lindqvist presents two divergent depictions of the picture stone in “Gotlands Bildsteine”, an undated drawing by Olof Sörling (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, p. 54) and a younger photograph of the repainted stone (Lindqvist 1941/42 I, fig. 18), probably repainted by himself, that can be dated to the year 1937 (Oehrl 2019a, p. 149). \n\nThe visible part of the picture stone above the root is decorated with faintly carved borders which fade out on the broad sides towards the root. In Sörling’s drawing (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, p. 54), an edge still extends to the root on the right broad side, while the borders were reconstructed along the full length of the visible part of the obverse in Lindqvist’s reconstruction (Lindqvist 1941/42 I, fig. 18). Along the broad sides, the decorated borders consist of triangular lines bordered by lateral side-lines. These meet at the upper narrow side with a double row of arcs enclosed by two outer boundary lines and a dividing line in between. “In the vertical borders, the lines creating the pattern are carved deep and wide in their middle parts, so that they form almost boat-like shapes”, as Lindqvist (1941/42 II, p. 54) notes. The centre of the obverse is decorated with a 38.0 cm large roundel with a whorl rosette enclosed by a double circle line and prongs running along the outer circle line. Two antithetical snake-like animals with simple S-shaped bodies are carved in the upper corners of the obverse between the roundel and the borders. In Sörling’s drawing, the head of the right snake is no longer visible while the left snake opens its mouth with a tongue sticking out. On the photograph of the repainted stone presented by Lindqvist (1941/42 I, fig. 18), the left snake’s head shows a large eye and a long distinct jaw as well as one (or several?) antenna or a horn while the open mouth of the right snake can be identified. Furthermore, both animals (snakes, seahorses or worms/dragons?) show spikes or bristle-like hair (Oehrl 2019a, p. 109), continuously running along the body of the left snake and clustered in three groups at the body of the right snake. Directly below the roundel two antithetical quadrupeds are depicted. In Lindqvist’s photograph, both animals are depicted in a similar posture, practically mirroring each other. The body of the left animal appears almost naturalistic yet ending in an elongated head with a spiked ear and a long mouth with a hooked upper jaw. The body of the right animal is far more compact and ends in a gooseneck-like head with mouth and jaws similar to the opposite quadruped. In contrast, the left animal in Sörling’s drawing is smaller and crouched, its body resembling a carnivore while head and snout appear equine. The right animal seems to be shying or rearing; the distinct head on the gooseneck is crowned with two horns or ears and the snout ends in an upturned hook. A third reconstruction of the images is depicted on a photograph of an earlier repainting of the picture stone from 1929, showing a precursor to Lindqvist’s later reading (Oehrl 2019a, table 129d). The only difference from the later reconstruction published in “Gotlands Bildsteine” is the vague shade of an anthropomorphic figure on the back of the left quadruped, possibly showing a rider (ibid. p. 149). It was probably based on this earlier reconstruction that Karl Hauck interpretated both animals as horses with riders holding reins (Oehrl 2019a, p. 149). During new investigations using RTI-viewer and 3D-scanning, Sigmund Oehrl could confirm Lindqvist’s reconstruction of the snake-like animal’s bodies. He could thus prove that the animals mirror each other – an assumption that was criticized in the meantime due to the poor preservation (Larsen 2009, 18). Furthermore, he could add more details to Lindqvist’s reconstruction of the head of the right animal (Oehrl 2019a, pp. 149–150). Hauck’s interpretation of two riders on horseback, in return, was rejected by Oehrl based on his analyses. He was able to identify a presumably anthropogenic depression above the left animal’s body in the RTI-viewer, which corresponds to the area painted by Lindqvist in his first reconstruction from 1929 and which could represent a rider on the animal’s back. An equivalent on the opposite animal, however, is missing as are indications of reins (Oehrl 2019a, pp. 80, 150). \n\nMT\n"

"@value": "The roundel with a whorl rosette, surrounded by a corona of rays or spikes in the centre of the depiction as a variant of a regularly occurring motif can most likely be interpreted as a symbol of the sun (Oehrl 2019a, pp. 124–125). More elaborate information on the possible interpretation of whorl motifs as sun symbols and the iconography of the Type A picture stones can be obtained in the article on GP 350 Sanda kyrka IV. \n\nThe two antithetical snake-like animals in the upper edges of the obverse might represent Mediterranean Sea-creatures such as dolphins, seahorses, ketoi or other mythological, stylised sea creatures. Anders Larsen (2009, pp. 40–41) suggests that these animals on several picture stones such as GP 263 Lärbro Pavals reflect a purely decorative adoption of the antique motif of seahorses which appear on many Roman mosaics while Hauck interprets these animals as dolphins as they are known from Roman and early Christian gravestones, representing psychopomps that guide the souls of the deceased into the afterlife (Hauck 1983a, pp. 536, 547), thus illustrating Mediterranean influences on the early picture stones (see also Lindqvist 1941/42 I, p. 89; II, pp. 91–92; Holmqvist 1952a, pp. 10–16, figs. 7–10; 1976, p. 562; Hauck 1983a, pp. 547, 551). Furthermore, as Oehrl (2019a, pp. 143, 294) observes, these animals might also show “the northern version of the antique Ceto” as a kind of sea monster. For more information on sea creatures of Roman origin depicted on Type A picture stones see in particular GP 263 Lärbro Pavals, GP 197 Hellvi Ire IV, GP 44 Bro kyrka II, GP 173 Hangvar Austers I, GP 269 Martebo kyrka 2. \n\nAccording to the classical reading, the two antithetical quadrupeds below the roundel could represent a horse fight, a motif which can probably be identified on several early picture stones (Oehrl 2019a, pp. 21, 62–63, 151, 158). Ritual horse fights are documented from later periods (Beck 2003; Stylegar 2006; 2014) and the topic of horse fights (called hestavíg in Old Norse literature) and horse sacrifice in the iconography of the (early) Gotland picture stones has often been discussed, see in particular GP 198 Hellvi Ire 7 and the following literature: Gjessing 1943, pp. 29–30; Lindqvst 1955, pp. 41–43; Ellmers 1970, pp. 243–245; Lamm/Nylén 2003, p. 26; Althaus 1993, pp. 87–89, 192–193; Lamm 1999; Beck 2003, pp. 96–97; Guber 2011, pp. 55–56; Pesch 2015a, p. 357; Oehrl 2019a, pp. 62–63. Large quantities of horse bones without traces of slaughter have been found next to the ring wall and in the settlement of Havor (Manneke et al. 2013, pp. 106–107). In addition, besides an interpretation as a fortified pen for breeding horses, it was suggested that the ring wall at Havor could have been used as an arena for horse fights in its early phase during the Roman Iron Age (Manneke 2005, p. 134). Thus, the interpretation of the two antithetic quadrupeds as horses incited to fight would find a concrete context in Havor (Toplak, in press). \n\nBased on Oehrl’s new results which suggest the existence of a rider on the left quadruped, the depiction could be interpreted as an example of the motif group of the mounted beast fighter (“Untierkämpfer”), which also appears on several early picture stones (Oehrl 2019a, pp. 158–160), and which would also explain the less naturalistic appearance of the right animal. In the context of the stylised sun symbol, the whole scene could allude to ideas of rebirth – the solar cycle as overcoming darkness and death, personified by the beast (see also Hauck 1983a, p. 547). \n\nMT\n"

Lindqvist classifies the fragment as representative of the first “Großsteingruppe”, group 4 – “Vallstenagruppe”, named after the stone GP 537 Vallstena Vallstenarum I. Characteristic of this group of monuments, consisting only of GP 537 Vallstena Vallstenarum I and Hablingbo Havor I, is the limitation to only one roundel (see VII). In contrast, Hauck (1983a, pp. 543–545) classifies Hablingbo Havor I as defining for his type IV (type IV,1) which is characterised by a whorl roundel as central motif, while GP 537 Vallstena Vallstenarum I belongs to his type V. Martin Rundkvist, in turn, suggests a typological classification of the outline shapes of the picture stones and defines GP 133 Hablingbo Havor II as Type dwarf 1 (Rundkvist 2012, pp. 155 – 160, table 3). \n\nA later dating to the 6th and 7th centuries as suggested by Wilhelm Holmqvist (1976, p. 563) was rejected by Oehrl (2019, p. 10). Lindqvist’s dating to the Migration Period finds support in the archaeological material from the cemetery of Havor which demonstrates a last phase of socio-political, economical, and perhaps even religious importance of the society at Havor and a rapid decline in the early Vendel Period (Toplak, in press). \n\nMT\n"

"@value": "The cemetery of Havor lies in the southern part of Gotland, on the southern banks of the former lake and later moorland of Mästermyr, on the northern outskirts of Hablingbo parish, some kilometres east of the western shore of Gotland. The north-eastern and probably oldest part of the cemetery was heavily disturbed by gravel extraction from the middle of the 19th century onwards, which led to the discovery of the picture stone GP 132 Hablingbo Havor I, and the extent as well as the original number of burials in this area remain uncertain. 2013). Approximately 800 meters east of the cemetery lies a ringfort, several buildings with stone foundations as well as the remains of further settlements in the immediately surrounding area. The ringfort was built no later than the end of the Pre-Roman Iron Age and was used in several phases at least until the end of the Migration Period as a meeting place and arena for socio-political or religious activities. Remains of settlements north of the ringfort can be dated back to the late Bronze Age or early Iron Age and are therefore slightly older than the earliest burials from the Pre-Roman Iron Age in the cemetery. Several stone foundations south of the ringfort and the rich finds from settlements, graves and the ringfort – such as Roman imports or golden jewellery and especially a unique hoard with a golden neck ring (Nylén 1962; 2005) – bear witness to the great regional significance of Havor as a socio-political or religious central place in the Roman Iron Age and the Migration Period. Following a decline of Havor in the Vendel Period, the late Viking Age burials attest a revival of the local society, probably due to increasing trading activities, but also a significant return to older traditions such as the re-use of older graves or the incorporation of picture stones in burials (Toplak 2022; in press). \n\nThe picture stone was found during the excavation of the cemetery of Havor in 1886. It was discovered in a late Viking Age grave (grave No. 191) where it was re-used as grave slab together with six partly fragmented picture stones (GP 134–138 Hablingbo Havor III–VII; the seventh stone is missing), similar to several other picture stones on Gotlandic Viking Age cemeteries (see Burström 1996; Thunmark-Nylén 1995–2006 III, pp. 582–584; Rundkvist 2012; Toplak 2022; Oehrl/Toplak, in press). The grave – a shallow burial mound with the inhumation of a male gendered individual with the head to the south – was located in a separated group of late Viking Age burials in the western area of the cemetery (see Toplak 2022). The deceased was buried in a supine position with dress accessories including two penannular brooches and a belt with eastern-type belt mounts as well as a knife, a comb, a fire striker, a clay pot and a large bronze bowl, which was probably imported to Gotland from the Frankish realm (Thunmark-Nylén 1995–2006 IV, p. 302; Toplak 2022, in press). The seven limestone slabs (labelled A–F by Gustafson) were arranged as a cover slab, based on two 3,3 m long rows of eight and nine fieldstones, respectively, that framed the 0,4–0,5-m broad burial pit. The obverses of the picture stones were facing downwards towards the burial. According to a rough sketch of the grave slab in situ, made by Gustafson during the excavation, the picture stone Hablingbo Havor II (stone A according to Gustafson’s designation) formed the southern end of the grave slab directly above the head of the deceased. \n\nAll seven picture stones were re-erected in the vicinity of the grave after the end of the excavation season in 1886. While the other five picture stones from grave 191 (GP 134–138 Hablingbo Havor III–VII; the sixth picture stone is lost) were moved from their location in the cemetery in Nilsson’s Träskhage (marshy pasture) to the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm as early as 1918 during a visit by Fredrik Nordin, the picture stone Hablingbo Havor II remained at the burial ground for almost two more decades. In 1910, during his last visit on Gotland, Gustafson examined the seven picture stones which he had excavated in 1886 and could not identify any serious damage on the picture stone. Nevertheless, in the 1930s moving the picture stone to a protected place such as Hablingbo church was discussed to prevent further damage to the stone, which was only covered with a tarpaulin during winter. In 1937, Sune Lindqvist suggested bringing the picture stone to Visby to consider the interests of the local population, where it was placed in Gotlands Fornsal in October of the same year. \n\nMT\n"

Bands are accompanied by approximately 1-cm-long and 2-mm-wide lines with rounded bases that stand at right angles to the band’s edges. Similar chiselled lines occasionally appear to form the band’s contours, but mostly the bands are defined by the same fine chisel lines running parallel to the bands and also filling the band’s inner surfaces. The chamfers toward the narrow sides at a distance of about 1 cm are accompanied by shallow grooves that at the right and left edges are not quite 1 cm wide but reach a width of 1.5 cm towards the top.” The upper narrow side is decorated with a broad border with stylised floral tendril ornamentation with the central ‘leaf’ formed like an animal’s head. \n\nAlong the vertical edges, broad borders without contour lines run down toward the root, decorated with a ‘running dog scroll’ motif with stylised animal heads on all its terminals that resembles the zoomorphic meander in the ‘Maison des Dauphins’ in Delos (c. 100 BC) (Holmqvist 1952a, pp. 14–16; Oehrl 2019a, p. 25, fn. 254). The gaps between the curved bands of the ‘running dogs’ form triangular spandrels that represent the necks of the animal heads. As Lindqvist (1941/42 II, p. 55) notes, “apparently all have been chiselled in completely; only once there seems to be a triangle in the middle that clearly was left standing.” From the mouths of the two uppermost animal heads, curled tongues reach into the centre of the stone. As on GP 132 Hablingbo Havor I, the central motif is a large roundel, measuring 46,0 cm in diameter but with a looped square (Saint Hannes cross (St. John’s cross) or Bowen knot which also appears on a gold bracteate, dating to the late Roman Iron Age or early Migration Perion (Oehrl 2019a, pp. 22–23) instead of the whirl rosette. This looped square as a motif in the central roundel is an exception, the so-called “Vallstena-Havor-typus” according to Sigmund Oehrl (2019a, pp. 9, 125, fn. 1156; see also Guber 2011, pp. 43–47). Below the roundel, two upright, standing, stylised antithetical animal figures are depicted whose bodies are similar to the s-shaped loops of the vertical borders. A circular ornament is depicted between their wide-open mouths. \n\nThe reading of the decoration is relatively consistent on the different representations of the picture stone such as the drawing by Olof Sörling (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, p. 55) and the repainting by Lindqvist (Lindqvist 1941/42 I, fig. 23). The only difference is the more precise reconstruction of the lower part of the picture stone with the two upright, standing animal figures, which are only partially reproduced in Sörling’s drawing. However, Gustafson had arrived at the same interpretation of the lower section of the centre field in his last examination of the stone in 1910, as can be seen in a sketch in one of his notebooks (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, p. 55). Contrary to what was initially assumed by several researchers – including Rutger Sernander, Nordin and cautiously also Gustafson – there were, however, no remains of the original (presumed) painting on the stone. \n\nMT\n"

More elaborate information on the possible interpretation of whirl motifs as sun symbols and the iconography of the Type A picture stones is available in the article on GP 350 Sanda kyrka IV. \n\nSince the upright, standing, antithetical animal figures below the central motif might be regarded as ceto- or dragon-like (sea) creatures analogous to other early picture stones (Oehrl 2019a, p. 109) and the stylised animals of the ‘running dog scroll’ motif of the broad borders resemble sea creatures such as dolphins in antique zoomorphic meanders such as in Delos (Lindqvist 1941/42 I, p. 89; Holmqvist 1952, pp. 10–16), the entire scene could be interpreted as rise of the life-giving sun from the sea (or perhaps from the underworld). If this interpretation was understood by the late Viking Age society at Havor, the position of the picture stone Hablingbo Havor II with its obverse facing the head of the deceased might reflect ideas of some form of a spiritual rebirth in the afterlife. In contrast, based on the interpretation of spiral roundels as labyrinthine symbols for the underworld, as suggested by Karl Hauck (1983a, pp. 546–547, 578–579; 1983b, pp. 444–445; see Oehrl 2019a, p. 125), the entire scene could depict and thus anticipate the deceased’s journey to the world beyond. \n\nMT\n"

Martin Rundkvist, in turn, suggests a typological classification of the outline shapes of the picture stones and defines Hablingbo Havor II as Type dwarf1 (Rundkvist 2012, pp. 155–160, table 3). \n\nA later dating to the 6th and 7th centuries as suggested by Wilhelm Holmqvist (1976, p. 563) was rejected by Oehrl (2019, p. 10). Lindqvist’s dating to the Migration Period finds support in the archaeological material from the cemetery of Havor which demonstrates a final phase of socio-political, economical, and perhaps even religious importance of the society at Havor and a rapid decline during the early Vendel Period (Toplak, in press). \n\nMT\n"

A small area of 90 x 30 m containing 7 stone settings immediately west of the road, belonging to Bjärs prästgård, is obviously also part of the Bjärs cemetery (RAÄ 45:1). About 160 graves were excavated by Fredrik Nordin (Nordin 1893; Nordin et al. 1906) during the years 1885–86. Further investigations of the spot were conducted by Nording during the early 1890s. The cemetery was used from the Roman Iron Age until the Viking Period. Most of the graves, however, date to the Vendel Period. The stones Hejnum Bjärs II–V were found in the north-western corner of the northern cemetery area, close to the road and the stone Hejnum Bjärs I about 200 m further south, also close to the road, at the edge of the middle area. \n\nHejnum Bjärs II was found by Nordin in 1894, after the excavations, when he examined the stones which covered grave no. 140 (Nordin et al. 1906, p. 53; no. 46 in Nerman 1969/75). The undisturbed cremation grave contained the following grave goods (ibid. and Rundkvist 2012, p. 153): a dress pin, a utensil brooch, a knife with metal-trimmed sheath, and a stamp-decorated pot. The burial can be dated to the late 6th century. "

In 1910, these matching pieces, or at least the lower fragment that can still be found today (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, fig. 413), were transferred to SHM, where Olof Sörling in 1911/12 produced a new drawing of them (ibid. I, fig. 28). Possibly, however, the ornamented top part already was lost at that time (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, pp. 70–71). “Limestone slab, 7–9 cm thick. The obverse is rough at the base, but less so further up and thus likely to be hewn there, though severely weathered. The narrow sides are dressed at an acute angle towards the obverse; whether they once were bounded by chamfers towards the obverse is unclear today. The width at the base is 59 cm. On the surviving piece, a distinct groove can be seen that is 3 mm wide and runs along the right vertical edge. Of the same kind is the horizontal groove that – according to [Fredrik Nordin’s] drawing – separated two panels of equal height. Of the decorations in these panels, only very insignificant remains can be discerned on the preserved piece” (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, p. 71). The carvings mentioned by Lindqvist can be seen in the drawings by Fredrik Nordin from 1894 (Nordin 1903, fig. 2; 1906, fig. 14) and Olof Sörling from about 1911/12 (Lindqvist 1941/42 I, fig. 28; ATA run- och bildstenssamling). A sketchy version of Nordin’s drawing in ATA apparently depicts remnants of a roundel in the area below the upper horizintal border on the upper fragment. Today, the whole upper fragment is lost. The remaining lower fragment includes approximately the right half of the horizontal and approximately the lower half of the right lateral groove. Furthermore, investigations of 3-D models have clearly shown that there are at least three three-pointed bird foot-shaped elements that extend downwards from the horizontal line. Presumably, these are simplified sea creature elements indicating the three-tipped tail fins of the ketos- and dolphin-like creatures adopted from Roman models (cf. GP 506 Tingstäde kyrka XVII, GP 263 Lärbro Pavals, GP 196 Hellvi Ire I). "

There is only a small number of stones of this kind known so far; apart from Hejnum Bjärs II and GP 188 Hejnum Bjärs IV, there are only GP 440 Stenkyrka Lillbjärs X, GP 430 Stenkyrka Lillbjärs XI, and GP 431 Stenkyrka Lillbjärs XII. On most of them there is only very poor decoration which makes it debatable whether those monuments should be called ʻpicture stonesʼ or not. On the basis of comparisons between the border decoration and similar ornaments in jewellery, Nerman (1935, pp. 106–107) dates the stone to period VI:2 (circa the period AD 475–500 to 550–600). Grave no. 140 (46), on whose stone covering the small monument was found (see IV), can be dated to the late 6th century (period VII:1 according to Nerman, i.e. circa AD 550–600). According to this, there was only a relatively short time between the erection and the secondary use of the stone. "

"@value": "The cemetery of Ire is one of Gotland’s largest and most important Iron Age burial grounds. It lies directly south of Lilla Ire farm, on a narrow, elongated elevation in the terrain, an area of about 385 x 40–70 m (NNV-SSÖ) immediately along and east of the road between Lilla Ire and Stora Ire. An estimated 400 (according to RAÄ, while Stenberger mentioned about 600) stone settings (rösen (cairns) and other circular stone settings) are still visible today. The burial ground was used continuously from the Roman Iron Age to the late Viking Period, is rich in finds and barely disturbed. During the straightening of the road, the first graves, dating to different periods, were archaeologically investigated in 1933–34. This was followed by isolated investigations of graves in various areas of the cemetery. In 1941–43 and 1945, the southern, Viking Age part of the burial ground was completely excavated under the direction of Mårten Stenberger (1936; 1942a–b; 1961; Thunmark-Nylén 1995–2006 IV:1, pp. 390–437). \n\nHellvi Ire I was discovered by Stenberger in 1935 when excavating the stone mound (cairn) (röse) no. 396 (= grave 99 in Nerman 1969/75; Stenberger 1936, pp. 91–96, fig. 11; Rundkvist 2012, p. 153 no. 25), which was almost oval, with a diameter of 3.3–4.0 m and a height of 35 cm. The picture stone had been used as cover slab directly on top of an undisturbed cremation burial within the stone mound, its obverse facing upwards. The back of the stone was stained black from the ashes of the cremation. The burial contained a sword, a lance, a set of gaming pieces of bone, several rectangular bronze and iron mounts, a knife, rivets with bronze heads, domed bronze sheet spangles, iron nails, fragments of a bone comb, a decorated pottery vessel, and a whetstone. The burial can be dated to the 6th century. Furthermore, the mound contained a female burial, also a cremation, with 28 glass beads, a carnelian, and the shaft of a bronze key. An exact dating of the female burial is not possible. \n\nStenberger (1936, p. 96) and Lindqvist (1942/42 I, pp. 32–33, fig. 1; cf. ATA run- och bildstenssamling A216:158) consider that Hellvi Ire I may have originally been erected on top of the nearby stone mound no. 394, which was framed by a ring of kerbstones. However, this is pure speculation. Lindqvist includes these kerbstones in his catalogue as “Hellvi Ire II”, although they have no decoration at all and therefore do not represent a kind of picture stone. However, as Lindqvist includes them, the stones GP 566–569 Hellvi Ire II:1–4 are also included in the present edition. "

ATA run- och bildstenssamling B3:54). The head part of the stone is occupied by a large roundel with a whorl motif. The whorl consists of three carved and three slightly raised spokes that alternate. The sickle-shaped spokes have a double outer line, just like the roundel itself. The corona of the roundel is formed by carved triangles, from which three line-shaped peaks extend. In the centre of the roundel there is a small central circle from which the sickle elements emanate, like a propeller. Below the whorl roundel is a pair of smaller roundels, not completely preserved, which show star-shaped rosettes, formed by 4- and 7-pointed oval prongs/leaves. The edge decoration of the picture stone consists of a double groove on the slightly convex upper side and single grooves on the lateral edges. From the latter, wave-shaped elements extend inwards and, like the prongs of the corona, end in three points. “Decorated with chiselled lines and chiselled background fields. The diameter of the large roundel is 75.5 cm (not counting the corona). Below, the left roundel is 28 cm in diameter, the right 28.5 cm. The grooves following the chamfers are 4 mm wide” (1941/42 II, p. 74). \n\nThe first published photograph of the stone by Stenberger (1936, fig. 12) depicts it with secondary paint, largely corresponding to Lindqvist’s interpretation, but instead of the three-pointed wavy elements on the edge lines, it reproduces remnants of a zigzag pattern. That these are to be understood as reminiscences of Roman depictions of dolphins, ketoi and other sea creatures, for which three-part tails are quite characteristic, can hardly be overlooked (Lindqvist 1941/42 I, p. 89; II, pp. 91–92; Holmqvist 1952a; Hauck 1983a, pp. 547, 551). It is therefore more than likely that the tripartite elements on Hellvi Ire I are to be interpreted as sea creature abbreviations. \n\nIn Hauck’s view, the dolphin imitations on Gotland’s early picture stones also took on the meaning of their models on Roman and early Christian gravestones, where they were to be understood as saviours of humans and guides of the soul. Thus, according to Hauck, the appearance of these creatures fits well into the iconography of the Type A stones, in which he sees prayers carved in stone that quote the horrors of death as well as the promise of assistance and salvation. The main symbol of this is the large roundel with the whorl motif, which represents the sun and promises the eternal return of life (Hauck 1983a, esp. p. 547. cf. Pesch 2015b, p. 95). \n\nMore elaborate information on the possible interpretation of whorl motifs and the iconography of the Type A picture stones can be found in the article on GP 350 Sanda kyrka IV. Lindqvist classifies the fragment as representative of his northern Gotlandic Pavalsgruppe, named after the stone GP 263 Lärbro Pavals (1941/42 I, p. 27). Characteristic of this relatively small group of monuments is their less-curved form with only a very slightly convex upper edge and hardly any protruding corners, and the depiction of rosettes and ʻdolphinʼ creatures (see VII). The stone is of some importance for Lindqvist’s dating of ʻAbschnittʼ A, as he sees particularly striking parallels between its decoration and the decoration of the Sösdala-style brooch from Eidsten in Vestfold, Norway (ibid. p. 109, fig. 250). In fact, the similarities are not limited to the design of the whorl motif alone, but also concern, as Hauck (1983a, pp. 591–592) notes, the combination of the whorl with star-shaped motifs as well as the appearance of sea creatures (in the case of Eidsten, a fish, ibid. fig. 56b). \n\nGrave no. 394, on which, according to Stenberger and Lindqvist, the picture stone could have originally stood (see IV) dates to the 5th century or around AD 500. However, this reconstruction is speculative and cannot be supported. In any case, the grave in which Hellvi Ire I was secondarily incorporated dates to the 6th century (Period VII:1 according to Nerman, i.e., c. AD 550–600). "

The obverse, which – particularly above the fragment’s middle section – has suffered severely from footsteps, appears to have been hewn flat and polished. The upper narrow side is slightly convex (the arc’s height is 6 cm to 89 cm between the upper corners), while the vertical narrow sides are slightly concave longitudinally. The narrow sides on the whole are hewn flat for their full width, but at least one of them features shallow grooves, about 1 inch wide, running across it. These grooves in turn have diagonal grooves, each in alternating directions. The reverse is raw. The broken edge runs parallel to the upper edge at a distance of about 46 cm; here, the stone’s width is 78 cm.” The stone is almost undamaged, and the carvings are easily discernible (photos of unpainted stone: ibid. Inside of it, along the upper edge, there are eleven semicircular arcs made of similar, but only 7–10 mm wide grooves, in the corners, small, triangular shapes with slightly concave sides. Along the vertical edges, mythical animals are shown that perhaps are corrupted derivatives of the classic dolphins, and then – if this assumption is correct – are depicted as common designs for their models, with the forked tails pointing upwards and the jaw (with spikes!) downwards. Such an interpretation appears to me at least a possibility and in my opinion should not be disregarded, although the similar mythical creatures of [GP 506 Tingstäde kyrka XVII] probably must be seen in a reverse manner (namely, with a forked head and a tail split into three). Like the grooves, the bases of the triangles and the dolphins are carved deeply. In the centre of the field, no traces of decoration can be discerned” (Lindqvist 1941/42 II, pp. 91–92). "

"@value": "Lindqvist’s observation that the animals forming the edge decoration on Lärbro Pavals go back to Roman depictions of sea creatures is certainly correct (Lindqvist 1941/42 I, p. 89; II, pp. 91–92; see also Holmqvist 1952a, pp. 10–16, figs. 7–10; 1976, p. 562; Hauck 1983a, pp. 547, 551). The three-part end of the S-shaped serpentine creatures on Lärbro Pavals and GP 506 Tingstäde kyrka XVII, however, is rather to be understood as a three-part tail, which is quite characteristic for dolphins, ketoi and other sea creatures in Roman iconography. Anders Larsen (2009, pp. 40–41, fig. 40), who has examined the figures on Lärbro Pavals in detail using a 3D model, concludes that the stone rather shows creatures with a three-pronged tail end, an elongated horse’s head and a long-pointed ear (cf. Oehrl 2019a, p. 95, fig. 64d). According to Larsen, these are sea horses as seen on numerous Mediterranean mosaics of the imperial period. In “Gotlands Bildsteine” the horse’s head is indeed not really recognisable. Whether we are dealing with dolphins, seahorses, ketoi or other mythological, stylised sea creatures that cannot be further defined must remain open. 95). \n\nFor more information on sea creatures of Roman origin depicted on Type A picture stones see in particular GP 197 Hellvi Ire IV, GP 44 Bro kyrka II, GP 173 Hangvar Austers I, GP 269 Martebo kyrka 2. More elaborate information on the possible interpretation of whorl motifs and the iconography of the Type A picture stones can be obtained in the article on GP 350 Sanda kyrka IV. "

They originated from the nave’s gable wall, the masonry of the triumphal arch, in which a hole had been broken during the construction of a chimney. In the same year, all those fragments were taken to Gotlands Museum. Lundmark (1925, p. 173) emphasises that only a few of the relevant fragments originating from the triumphal arch were transferred to Gotlands Museum, while most of them were transported to the nearby lake Tingstäde träsk. Lindqvist adds in a footnote (1941/42 II, p. 135): “In 1920, several other stones were transferred to GF that came from the same part of the roof masonry as stones Nos. XV–XIX together with the note that they represented fragments of picture stones. They were entered in the inventory sheet as No. C4645–4658. They surely display – at least in part – trimming at their edges characteristic for the purpose they served in the masonry. I was not able, however, to find clear proof for the notion that these stones represent fragments of picture stones.” \n\nIn total, not fewer than 26 picture stones from Tingstäde church are registered in Lamm/Nylén 2003 – The stones Tingstäde kyrka I–XX were published by Lindqvist. In 1984, Beata Böttger-Niedenzu discovered GP 507–509 Tingstäde kyrka 21–23, and GP 494 Tingstäde kyrka 24. Two more stones, which are incorporated into the wall of the tower, were discovered between 1990 and 2002 (GP 497–498 Tingstäde kyrka 25–26). The first Romanesque building with a nave and an apsidal choir was erected during the 12th century. In the beginning of the 13th century, the nave was enlarged, and around the middle of the century the old choir was replaced by the present one. The Romanesque portal which today leads to the sacristy probably represents the choir portal of the 12th century church which was re-used in the new building. "

The preserved and appropriately coloured carvings are easily discernible. Lindqvist (1941/42 II, p. 136) describes them as follows: “The decoration consists of a slightly chiselled, up to 14 mm wide groove running slightly more than 1 cm inside the chamfer and of a row (i.e., two complete and the front part of a third) of s-shaped ‘dolphins’ chiseled in the same manner, just inside of the groove. In the field inside of this border, the pointed terminal of another chiselled figure can be discerned.” The figures that Lindqvist refers to here as dolphins also appear on GP 263 Lärbro Pavals as border decoration. He regards them as mythical animals “[…] that perhaps are corrupted derivatives of the classic dolphins, and then – if this assumption is correct – are depicted pursuant to the common designs of their models, with the forked tails pointing upwards and the jaw (with spikes!) downwards. Such an interpretation appears to me at least a possibility and in my opinion should not be disregarded, although the similar mythical creatures of [Tingstäde kyrka XVII] probably must be seen in a reverse manner (that is, with a forked head and a tail split into three)” (ibid. pp. 91–92). "@value": "Lindqvist’s observation that the animals forming the edge decoration on GP 263 Lärbro Pavals go back to Roman depictions of sea creatures is certainly correct (Lindqvist 1941/42 I, p. 89; II, pp. 91–92; see also Holmqvist 1952a, pp. 10–16, figs. 7–10; 1976, p. 562; Hauck 1983a, pp. 547, 551). The three-part end of the S-shaped serpentine creatures on GP 263 Lärbro Pavals and Tingstäde kyrka XVII, however, is rather to be understood as a three-part tail, which is quite characteristic for dolphins, ketoi and other sea creatures in Roman iconography. Anders Larsen (2009, pp. 40–41, fig. 40), who has examined the figures on Lärbro Pavals in detail using a 3D model, concludes that the stone rather shows creatures with a three-pronged tail end, an elongated horse’s head and a long, pointed ear (cf. 95). \n\nFor more information on sea creatures of Roman origin depicted on Type A picture stones, see in particular GP 197 Hellvi Ire IV, GP 44 Bro kyrka II, GP 173 Hangvar Austers I, GP 269 Martebo kyrka 2. More elaborate information on the possible interpretation of whorl motifs and the iconography of the Type A picture stones can be obtained in the article on GP 350 Sanda kyrka IV. "
