Context and Discovery

Measurements, Material and Condition
The 19 cm thick limestone slab is roughly rectangular and measures 110 x 56 cm. The fragment preserves more than half of the slightly convex upper edge and 110 cm of the right lateral edge, with the original, probably slightly protruding, upper right corner broken off. The other two sides of the rectangle have straight broken edges. The shallowly carved and mostly well-preserved decorations were secondarily traced with black paint.

Description of Ornament and Images
Along the preserved right lateral edge of the stone, two parallel grooves run as the only border decoration. The border on the upper edge is more elaborately formed. It consists of two parallel, horizontal but slightly curved fields framed by double or triple grooves. A kind of stepped or wavy pattern can be seen within the two fields, its S-shaped elements mirrored against each other. About three quarters of a large roundel can be seen in the main field of the fragment, which means in the head field of the picture stone. The roundel is framed by a double groove from which straight pointed rays are protruding outwards. The roundel depicts a whorl of alternatingly carved and raised crescent elements.

Interpretation of the Imagery
For the interpretation of the large whorl motif, which is usually interpreted as a representation of the sun and interpreted in a cosmological and eschatological sense, see in detail the article on GP 350 Sanda kyrka IV.

Type and Dating
The slab represents an early-type picture stone, i.e., Type A according to Lindqvist’s typology, dating between AD 400 and 600. The double upper border, which contains a mirrored step or wave pattern corresponds to the layout of the Type A monuments GP 537 Vallstena Vallstenarum I, GP 554 Väskinde kyrka 5, and GP 320 Unknown Find Spot.
