Context and Discovery The fragment was found in storage at Gotlands Museum without bearing an inventory number.
Measurements, Material and Condition The up to about 20 cm thick limestone slab preserves a part of this early-type monument’s original, slightly convex upper edge including the right corner. This surviving edge, which appears to be slightly chamfered, has a length of 72 cm. The rest of the fragment has a maximum height of 49 cm. The surface is flat and well-preserved. The upper edge is a little damaged with a small part in its middle broken off.
Description of Ornament and Images The only surviving decorative element on the fragment is a border consisting of two grooves running parallel to the upper edge and the small surviving part of the right lateral edge. In the field, no remains of carvings are discernible.
Interpretation of the Imagery No interpretation
Type and Dating The fragment probably represents the head of a tall early-type picture stone, i.e., Type A according to Lindqvist’s typology, dating between AD 400 and 600. The poor border decoration, a pair of parallel grooves on the lateral as well as on the upper edge, has some correspondences in the material, but this is too insignificant for a more precise assignment to a subgroup. However, the slab could also represent a kerb stone of the Västkindetypus, which is named after GP 548 Väskinde kyrka IV and characterized by pairs of linear grooves at the edge of the obverse as only decorative elements (Lindqvist 1941/42 I, p. 33). A possible width of a kerb stone of little more than 50 cm is still within the usual range.
