How to use
Whatever it is that you are looking for: you need to perform a search to view results. Our online edition offers both predefined simple search options, and more advanced search options for a more refined search.
To get started, type one or more search words in the search bar at the top of the page, then either press the Enter-key on your keybord or click on the little magnifying glass. By leaving this search field blank and clicking on the little magnifying glass, you get a list of all the picture stones in our database.
If you enter several words your search will only return matches for objects whose descriptions contain all of those words. By enclosing your search words in "quotation marks", only those objects that include the exact wording – in the exact order you have written them – will be returned. Searching for "Viking Age" will only return objects that feature both words together, but not any objects hat only contain the word "Viking" or the word "Age".
Note that this simple search searches in all the texts in our online edition, even the descriptive texts where the stones are discussed and compared with other stones. This means, for example, if you enter a place name, the list of results will contain all picture stones where this place name is mentioned, not only the stones found there.
To obtain better search results, you can refine your search and turn to the Advanced Search. More information is below.
Browse the picture stones
Clicking on the button „Browse the picture stones“ on the start page will take you to an extended simple search. Here you can search for stones from specific parishes, types of stones, stones according to their find context, and iconographic keywords.
Advanced Search
If you already have got some specific information or specific questions as your point of departure, we recommend you use the Advanced Search. Here you can combine different fields with a free text search. In the left-hand field, you can select the field to be searched: By clicking on „Any field“, you can choose the type of information you are interested in. The field in the middle allows you to select the search operation. In the right-hand field, you can enter the search word/value.
You can add new fields by clicking on the + symbol. Clicking on the little arrows will show you all the options.
Search tips for experts
If you know a stone’s GP-number (for that numbering, see the chapter "The Monuments"), you can use the free text search at the top of the page by entering the GP-number in the following format: You will have to add as many 0 as are needed to have four digits after GP, without a space between GP and the digits. For example, if you are looking for the stone GP 27 Bara Nederbjärs I, you should enter "GP0027" into the search bar at the top of the page.
